Modern Beginnings of Seven Star Mantis in Shanghai

Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu originated in the Shaolin Temple and developed in the Shandong region of China. It was first brought to Shanghai in 1919 and made famous by Master Luo Guang Yu (1888-1944) as head instructor at Shanghai. Master Luo spent ten years teaching in Shanghai (1919 – 1929) and became known as one of the Four Superlords of Jingwu. During his tenure he developed a number of talents including Lin Bo Yan who also taught in Shanghai for many years and formed the start of our family branch.

A Vision to Bring Mantis back to Shanghai

In 2002 Kai Uwe Pel was based in Singapore, training with both the Singapore Chin Woo school and Master Koh Kim Kok. He was then invited by the Shanghai Jing Wu to teach traditional Seven Star Mantis kung fu in Shanghai, as well as to remodel the school’s “old building” and update their international website. Once the initial project was completed, he chose to stay in Shanghai long term and follow in the same footsteps as Luo Guang Yu and Lin Bo Yan.

Kai maintained a public class with the strong traditional approach and high standards set by his own master and his predecessors before. A student base was created and a group of dedicated trainees came through. Since then Seven Star Praying Mantis has enjoyed a strong 16 year revival and its traditions continue to be carried today by Kai’s senior students.
