Mindfulness is not just something reserved for spiritual practice. It is critical in the development of Situation Awareness (SA) which is broadly recognized as a foundation for successful decision making skills across a broad range of situations, many of which involve the protection of human life, including law enforcement, aviation, military command, and interpersonal self defense. Today’s article is dedicated to exploring the concept of Situation Awareness and its intimate relation to the Eight Point Path to Self Defense.

In part one of today’s article I will introduce a working definition and theoretical framework on SA. In part two I will introduce the fundamentals of practical SA for self defense. In part three I will introduce the Threat Assessment Matrix and demonstrate its role in threat detection. In part four I will introduce the REAL State of Awareness and SA model (REAL SASA) intimately related to threat assessment and the decision making process. And lastly, in part five I will introduce the Eight Point Path to Self Defense which ties everything together. As always it is my wish that you find the information both informative, relevant and most importantly practical in your journey of martial practice and self defense.
