Kai Uwe Pel hosted a weapons kung fu seminar in Recklinghausen, Germany, on Saturday, January 20, 2018, where he taught the original “Fifth Son Eight Diagram Staff” (五郎八卦棍) of Northern Shaolin created by the monk Yang Wu Lang (杨五郎). In attendance were students from Bremen, Bochum, and Steinfurt, including long time student Kai Ehlemann from Bochum who began training with Kai in 1997, and who previously attended the Qingdao Training Camp in China hosted by Master Pel in 2008.
The seminar lasted four hours where Kai taught the full set focusing on details of movements as well as highlighting some basic fighting applications . All students put in a lot of hard work and effort and it was a lot of fun! Great job!

The Firth Son Eight Diagram Staff set was created by the Legendary Yang Wu Lang (alternatively known as Yang Yan De, 杨延德) who was the fifth son of the Song Dynasty general Yang Ye. Born into a military family Yang Wu Lang practiced martial arts and became particularly adept at spear fighting. After suffering tremendous loss including the death of his four elder brothers, Yang Wu Lang sought refuge at a Buddhist Monastery on Mount Wutai – considered one of the five sacred mountains in Buddhism – located in current day Shanxi province. Dedicating himself to monkhood and leading a life of peace, Yang Wu Lang could no longer wield lethal weapons so he removed the blades from his weapons where he was permitted to carry a staff. There he developed spear fighting techniques into staff techniques which became famed and known as the “Fifth Brother Eight Diagram Staff”. Today the set commonly practiced in traditional Chinese martial art systems, and it remains a fundamental staff set passed down as part of the Eighteen Weapons training in the Luo Guang Yu Seven Star Praying Mantis system.
We would like to thank everyone for coming out and working so diligently.
Train hard!
